Quick answer
Which visa or green card fits film and TV professionals?
Most film and TV professionals use the O-1B. For motion picture and TV work, the standard is extraordinary achievement: recognition as outstanding, notable or leading in the field (8 CFR 214.2(o)(3)(ii)). You need a nomination or win for a significant award, or 3 of 6 criteria. Key crew may use O-2. EB-1A is the green card route.
- The rule names awards such as an Academy Award, an Emmy, a Grammy or a Director’s Guild Award.
- Advisory opinions must come from a union and a management organization.
- Film and TV petitions cannot use comparable evidence.
- Streaming films, web series and commercials generally count as film and TV. Self-made vlogs generally do not.

Crew can qualify too. The O-1 definition of arts names directors, set designers, lighting and sound designers, costume designers and makeup artists. The Policy Manual says film and TV petitions may not rely on comparable evidence (Vol. 2, Part M, Ch. 4). See O-1B criteria for the arts.

How a film or TV O-1B usually comes together
-
Pick the petitioner
A US employer, a US agent, or a foreign employer through a US agent files Form I-129. An agent suits people working on several productions.
-
Map your credits to the criteria
Collect credits, reviews, box office or ratings, award notices and contracts. Aim for at least 3 criteria with strong proof.
-
Get the advisory opinions
For film and TV, consultation must be with the union for your occupation and a management organization in your area (8 CFR 214.2(o)(5)(iii)). See advisory opinions.
-
Add O-2 crew if needed
O-2 crew need their own petition and their own union and management consultation (8 CFR 214.2(o)(5)(iv)).
-
Plan for the green card
