You renewed your US passport, and your OCI card still lists the old passport number. Before your next trip to India, that needs fixing. Here's what India's OCI portal says.

As of November 2, 2026, this covers when to update, what it costs, and what to upload.

  • There's no personal interview for an OCI reissue.
  • A reissue is ordinarily decided within 15 days of acknowledgment.

Do you have to update OCI with a new passport?

Yes. India's OCI portal answers the question directly: "An OCI Cardholder shall have to get the OCI Card re-issued each time when a new passport is issued." The cardholder "may upload a copy of the new passport containing the photo of the passport holder and also a latest photo on the online system under OCI Miscellaneous Services each time a new passport is issued" (MHA, OCI Miscellaneous FAQs).

Is there a deadline?

Three months for the free update. "These documents may be uploaded by the OCI Cardholder within three months of receipt of the new passport. This service will be provided on gratis basis."

After that, there's a charge. "In case of updation of passport details after 3 months of the receipt of new passport, will be processed by charging a fee of US $ 25." The portal adds that applicants may have to visit the Indian mission with originals "in case of payment of late fee for passport updation in the OCI."

What do you upload?

Three copies and a photo. Do you need an interview or a mission visit?

Usually not. The portal says there's no personal interview for reissue. On visits, it says you don't need to go "but applicants may be required to visit the Indian Mission/ Post/ FRRO concerned with the originals of the supporting documents" when paying the late fee or "if the concerned Indian Mission/ Post/ FRRO requires."

About two weeks. "The grant or otherwise of the re-issuance of OCI Card shall be ordinarily decided in 15 days from the date of acknowledgement of the application on the online system by Indian Mission/ Post/ FRRO." The portal also says "e-OCI Card shall be issued in respect of any/ all service(s)."

Other changes too. The portal lists "Change of personal particulars viz. nationality etc," mistakes made "while submitting online application viz. name, father's name, date of birth etc," and "Change of address/occupation of the OCI Cardholder."
