H-1B stamping in India in 2026: no dropbox, no third-country posts, long waits

As of October 21, 2026, H-1B stamping in India means an in-person interview, generally at a post in your country of nationality or residence, after an online presence review. The dropbox route for H-1B renewals ended on October 1, 2025, and the most recent reports we could verify put new India appointments in 2027.

As of October 21, 2026, H-1B stamping in India comes with three constraints that did not exist two years ago. Almost every H-1B applicant must attend an in-person interview, because the State Department's interview waiver ("dropbox") route for H-1B renewals ended on October 1, 2025 (U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica, Interview Waiver Update). Applicants are directed to book at a post in their country of residence or nationality, which for an Indian national living in the United States effectively means India (U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India, Visas). And since December 15, 2025, H-1B and H-4 applicants have been subject to an online presence review, according to MIT's International Scholars Office (MIT International Scholars Office), which MIT reports led posts in India to cut the number of interviews they schedule each day (MIT International Scholars Office, travel warning).

The result, on the most recent evidence we could verify, is that new H-1B appointments in India were being offered in 2027 (Forbes, April 12, 2026). This guide covers what is in force, the waits, and the narrow options left.

Key facts
  • Since October 1, 2025, the State Department has required most nonimmigrant visa applicants, including H-1B renewals, to attend an in-person interview.
  • The remaining routine interview waivers cover diplomatic and official applicants and certain B-1/B-2 and H-2A renewals, not H-1B.
  • Since September 6, 2025, the State Department has directed nonimmigrant visa applicants to book at a post in their country of nationality or residence.
  • Since December 15, 2025, H-1B and H-4 applicants have been subject to an online presence review and are told to set social media accounts to public.
  • The State Department stopped domestic visa renewals in 2004; its pilot to resume them for certain H-1B workers accepted applications from January 29 to April 1, 2024.
  • An expired visa stamp does not end H-1B status inside the United States; it matters when you need to re-enter.

What has changed for H-1B visa stamping since 2025?

Is the H-1B dropbox still available in 2026?

No. Renewal without an interview, often called "dropbox", is what the State Department calls its Interview Waiver Program, and since October 1, 2025 applicants in most visa categories, including renewals, have had to attend an in-person interview (U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic).

The law requires an in-person interview for nonimmigrant visa applicants aged 14 to 79 unless it is waived, and it lets consular officers waive the interview for some renewals in the same classification within 12 months of the prior visa's expiry (8 U.S.C. 1202(h)). That waiver is discretionary, and the State Department narrowed its use through 2025:

  • According to UC Berkeley's International Office, on February 18, 2025 it cut the renewal waiver window from 48 months back to the statutory 12 months and revoked a discretionary waiver for some first-time applicants (Berkeley International Office).
  • On September 18, 2025, it issued an update, effective October 1, 2025, that superseded a July 25, 2025 update (U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica).

The September 2025 update reads:

"All nonimmigrant visa applicants, including applicants under the age of 14 and over the age of 79, will generally require an in-person interview with a consular officer except:" U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica, Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025

The exceptions are A-1, A-2, C-3, G-1 to G-4, NATO and TECRO E-1 applicants, diplomatic- and official-type visas, and B-1/B-2 and H-2A renewals within 12 months of the prior visa's expiry where that visa was issued for full validity to an applicant aged 18 or older (U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica). H-1B and H-4 are not on the list. The same update says consular officers may still require an interview "on a case-by-case basis for any reason" (U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica). We found no later update that restores H-1B waivers.

Can Indians still get H-1B stamping in a third country?

In practice, only if they genuinely live in that country. According to MIT's International Students Office, on September 6, 2025, the State Department directed nonimmigrant visa applicants to schedule interviews at a U.S. embassy or consulate in their country of nationality or residence, with limited exceptions; the announcement was updated on October 10, 2025 (MIT International Students Office). According to MIT's summary, the State Department warned that applicants who book outside their country of nationality or residence may find it more difficult to qualify, and applicants should ask the consulate what proof of residence it requires (MIT International Students Office).

The U.S. Mission to India repeats the instruction on its visa page and adds that visa application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable (U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India, Visas).

The regulation ties applications to residence. It allows an application where you are physically present but not resident only when that post agrees:

"A consular office having jurisdiction over the area in which the alien is physically present but not resident has agreed, as a matter of discretion or at the direction of the Department, to accept the alien's application" 22 CFR 41.101(a)(1)(ii)

The September 2025 instruction is the Department using that discretion against third-country filing. The statute separately requires an in-person interview for anyone applying outside their country of nationality or residence, so an applicant who is neither a national nor a resident of the country where they apply cannot use a dropbox in any case (8 U.S.C. 1202(h)(2)(A)).

How long is the wait for H-1B stamping in India in 2026?

We could not confirm an official October 2026 wait figure for H-1B interviews in India. The most recent reporting we could verify points to waits measured in many months:

  • MIT's International Scholars Office reported that in December 2025, posts in India rescheduled H-1B and H-4 interviews originally set for December 15, 2025 or later to March or April 2026, or later, because consulates were reducing daily interview numbers to accommodate the added vetting (MIT International Scholars Office).
  • On January 26, 2026, Business Standard reported that the State Department's portal showed "NA" as the next available appointment for H, L, O, P and Q categories, that the posts in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata showed no regular availability, and that some appointments moved to March 2026 were moved again to October 2026 or into 2027 (Business Standard, January 26, 2026).
  • On March 26, 2026, Business Standard reported no available interview dates across four U.S. consulates in India, with the earliest appointments around March 2027 (Business Standard, March 26, 2026).
  • On April 12, 2026, Forbes reported that, according to companies and attorneys, new H-1B and L-1 appointments in India were limited to 2027, although Mission India sometimes opens current-year slots because of added staff and cancellations (Forbes, April 12, 2026).

Why are H-1B appointments in India so slow?

The main cause cited by the consulates, as MIT's International Scholars Office reports it, is the added vetting (MIT International Scholars Office). The same office reports that the State Department announced on December 3, 2025 that, from December 15, 2025, H-1B and H-4 applicants would have their online presence reviewed, extending a review already applied to F, M and J applicants (MIT International Scholars Office). Mission India's visa page says H-1B and H-4 applicants, among others:

"are instructed to adjust the privacy setting on all social media accounts to “public” or “open” to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States under U.S. law." U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India, Visas (notice, checked October 21, 2026)

According to Forbes, Tiffany Derentz, a partner at BAL, said a post that previously allocated about 10 minutes per applicant would likely need 20 or more, so it has to offer fewer interviews (Forbes, April 12, 2026). Forbes also cites staffing shortages, the end of waivers and the country-of-residence rule (Forbes, April 12, 2026). With third-country stamping closed, Indian demand now runs through the posts in India (Business Standard, January 26, 2026).

Can you renew an H-1B visa inside the United States?

Not at present. The legal authority exists: the State Department may issue visas in the United States to applicants maintaining E, H, I, L, O or P status who were previously issued a visa abroad (22 CFR 41.111(b)(3)). The State Department discontinued domestic renewal of non-diplomatic visas in 2004, and its December 2023 notice set up a pilot to resume it for certain H-1B workers (Federal Register). Under that notice, published December 21, 2023 at 88 FR 88467, the pilot accepted applications from January 29 to April 1, 2024 (Federal Register).

The pilot was narrow. It covered only H-1B renewals where the prior visa was issued by Mission Canada between January 1, 2020 and April 1, 2023, or by Mission India between February 1, 2021 and September 30, 2021, and it released about 2,000 application slots per mission each week (Federal Register). Forbes reported in April 2026 that the administration had not resumed domestic renewals (Forbes, April 12, 2026). We found no later announcement reopening it.

Do you need a valid H-1B stamp if you are not traveling?

No. The stamp is an entry document, and the State Department's manual is direct:

"A visa is not the same as immigration status. Many travelers confuse the two. A visa does not entitle the bearer to enter or remain in the United States." 9 FAM 403.9-4(A)(a)

The same section says a visa's validity is the window for applying for admission at a port of entry and "has no bearing on the length of time" a person may be admitted; that is set by the DHS officer at entry (9 FAM 403.9-4(A)). The admitted period is recorded on Form I-94 (22 CFR 41.112(d)(2)(i)). So an expired stamp matters when you leave and need to come back, not while you stay.

There is one narrow travel exception. Under automatic visa revalidation, an expired nonimmigrant visa can be treated as extended for readmission after a trip of no more than 30 days solely to contiguous territory, if, among other conditions, you hold an unexpired I-94, have maintained status, have a valid passport and did not apply for a new visa while abroad (22 CFR 41.112(d)). It does not apply to nationals of countries the State Department identifies as supporting terrorism (22 CFR 41.112(d)(3)). Applying for a new visa during that trip ends the benefit, which matters now that third-country applications are discouraged.

Two other points come up often. The new $750 paid expedited appointment applies only to B-1/B-2 visitor visa applicants at selected posts, from July 1 to December 31, 2026 (Federal Register, 91 FR 34768). And Mission India accepts expedite requests only from applicants who already hold a confirmed appointment, describes expedited slots as very limited, and takes emergency appointment requests only online (U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India, Visas; Nonimmigrant Visas).

If you have a pending green card application, travel works differently; our guide to advance parole and travel while an I-485 is pending covers that route. The separate $100,000 H-1B entry payment is covered in our October 2026 status update on the H-1B fee.

What this means for you

For most Indian H-1B workers, a trip that depends on getting a new stamp in India is a trip without a dependable return date. Business Standard and Forbes both reported workers stranded in India after their December 2025 appointments were moved (Business Standard, March 26, 2026; Forbes, April 12, 2026).

Before you book any international travel
  • Check the expiry date on your H-1B visa stamp, not just your I-797 approval and I-94.
  • Assume an in-person interview. Do not plan around a dropbox appointment.
  • Do not plan a third-country stamping trip unless you actually reside in that country.
  • Hold a confirmed interview date before you leave, and plan for it to move.
  • Set social media accounts to public before the interview, and make sure your DS-160 matches what you have told USCIS. Inconsistencies carry real misrepresentation risk.
  • Agree a contingency with your employer, such as remote work, in case you are stuck abroad.
  • If you are on the green card path, weigh how a long absence fits your H-1B to green card timeline.

Whether a specific trip is worth the risk depends on your stamp, your petition, your employer and any pending filings. That is a question for your attorney.

Frequently asked questions

Is the H-1B dropbox still available in India in 2026?

No routine dropbox exists for H-1B renewals in 2026. The State Department's September 18, 2025 update, effective October 1, 2025, limited interview waivers to diplomatic and official applicants and certain B-1/B-2 and H-2A renewals within 12 months of expiry. H-1B and H-4 applicants generally need an in-person interview, and consular officers can require an interview from anyone, for any reason.

Can I get my H-1B visa stamped in Canada, Mexico, Dubai or Singapore instead of India?

Generally not, unless you actually live there. Since September 6, 2025, the State Department has directed nonimmigrant visa applicants to book at a post in their country of nationality or residence and warned that applying elsewhere may make it harder to qualify. Mission India also states that visa fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, so a third-country booking can cost you the fee.

Can I renew my H-1B visa stamp without leaving the United States?

Not at the moment. The regulations allow the State Department to issue H visas inside the United States, but the Department stopped domestic renewals in 2004, and its pilot to resume them for certain H-1B workers accepted applications only from January 29 to April 1, 2024. Forbes reported in April 2026 that the program had not been resumed, and we found no later announcement.

Do I have to leave the US if my H-1B visa stamp expires?

No. The visa stamp is a travel document for seeking entry, not your immigration status. The State Department's Foreign Affairs Manual says a visa's validity has no bearing on how long a person may be admitted. Your authorized stay is shown on your Form I-94. An expired stamp becomes a problem when you travel abroad and need to come back.

How long is the wait for an H-1B visa appointment in India?

We could not confirm an official October 2026 figure. Business Standard reported in January 2026 that regular H-1B slots at the Indian posts showed as unavailable, and in March 2026 that the earliest dates were around March 2027. Forbes reported in April 2026 that new H-1B and L-1 appointments in India were limited to 2027. Check the booking system before you book any travel.
